»Mosques in Germany«, photographed by Wilfried Dechau

The architectural photographer Wilfried Dechau travelled all over Germany on behalf of the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities in Essen and took a closer look at and photographed mosques and their architecture. In doing so, he spoke with many members of the Muslim community and was always received very friendly.

The photos in this book show mosques in the context of German urban scenarios – their interior architecture, the atmosphere during Friday prayers, imams, children, women, men. The book was visually adapted to the cultural conditions. In the Koran, an ornament is drawn around the scripture so as not to touch the holy scripture. This stylistic element was also adopted in this book and printed in gold. Image compositions and white space highlight the photographs in their blaze of colour. For a better overview a PDF is available for download.

For this report Wilfried Dechau visited very different mosques in Pforzheim, Penzberg, Mannheim, Wolfsburg, Aachen, Karlsruhe, Hamburg and Stuttgart. The photo reportage, produced in March and April 2008, forms the basis for an exhibition that has already been shown several times in Germany (for example at the Aedes Architekturforum in Berlin and the Kasseler Architektur_zentrum) and – with the support of the Goethe-Institut – has also been exhibited internationally, including in Jakarta, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Izmir and Cairo.
